A Programme of Recruitment, Training & Education
In support of the Aims and Purposes of the Company |
|
| |
When Guilds were originally formed in medieval London they generally
had five very clear aims: fellowship, charity, citizenship, commerce,
comradeship and conviviality. All the great livery companies
and guilds have had a history of supporting worthwhile causes
in many ways. One of the main objectives of The Worshipful
Company of International
Bankers is to further the trade of international banking and
financial services practitioners. In support of this mission
one vital component of the work pursued through the Company is
the education and training of the young. The Company formulated
and initiated CityStart in 2002. Our goal is to strengthen the
links between the international financial services community
and the City of London and neighbouring boroughs.
The Company seeks to promote recruitment
and development of employees for the financial services industry
with particular emphasis on those younger people in the immediate
area of the City who would not normally be able to aspire to
a City job. Statistics show that our immediate neighbours are
under-represented in our sector. Therefore our focus is directed
at implementing programmes that seek to redress the imbalance
by tapping into this talented and ethnically diverse population.
Though our work is still in its infancy this paper outlines a
combination of programmes we are involved with or are evaluating
for future implementation. Many of these activities have been
developed in association with other important groups in the City
(see Professional Links below). Company members and their firms
are providing considerable support in the achievement of these
goals. It is our firm belief that the individual efforts of our
members to make a significant contribution to the local community
will be greatly enhanced by working in concert.
The Company has forged several critical alliances in the City
to further our work. The groups profiled below have worked with
the Company to identify and implement specific programmes of interest
for our Members. We have achieved some notable successes and
have laid the foundations for long term positive impact in our
industry and the community. We invite you to consider these programmes
and to contact us if you wish to play a more active role. |

The Brokerage Citylink is an established, employer
led charity based at 65 London Wall. The Brokerage manages
the Business Traineeship Programme for the Corporation of
London. The Brokerage mission reflects an ethos shared by
the Company. Their purpose is two-fold; to empower local inner-city
residents (many from boroughs with the highest levels of
deprivation in the country) to gain access to the worthwhile
job opportunities that are available in the City and to influence
and inform City employers about the skills and potential
of its talented local workforce.
Company members and their firms have played a leading role
in expanding access to skills based training and paid positions
within our industry sector. With its primary focus on the
next generation of job seekers, the Brokerage aims to raise
the aspirations and awareness of local young people to
the job opportunities in the City. By involving City employers
and providing practical help and guidance on an individual
basis the Brokerage has become the model of best practice
for many other local recruitment projects, but remains
unique in the City. Since its inception in 1996 the Brokerage
has assisted over 1200 unemployed inner city residents
and students from fifty different schools to find work. |

Schools and Universities
The Charity & Education Committee, through its sub-Committees (Universities Working Group, Schools Working Group and Vocational Working group) continues to forge close liaisons and now has good working relationships with Durham University Business School, Loughborough University, Kings College London and the IFS School of Finance in addition to many local borough Schools. |

Sir John Cass Business School offers a full range of undergraduate
and postgraduate degrees and is a leading provider of business
and management education. Both the undergraduate and masters
programmes have been developed in response to the needs of
City employers and combine academic rigor with a practical
approach. These features make it one of the strongest Business
Schools in London. The school provides scholarships for local
students from disadvantaged backgrounds and the Company has
agreed to provide financial support for these students. |

The City of London School for Boys is a leading independent
school that is owned by the Corporation of London. Academically
successful and ethnically mixed the ethos of the school is
to widen access to talented youngsters from the inner London
boroughs irrespective of financial means. Equally though
the school has been a significant contributor to the local
community through secondment of teachers to the local state
schools. The City of London School is opening doors of opportunity
in the inner city to those who have few. The Company
commenced scholarship funding in 2004. |

The City of London School for Girls is a non-denominational,

Community Outreach & Recruitment |

Business Traineeships – Company member firms provide extensive
support for this programme, which targets 17-20 year old students
of ‘A’ level or Advanced GNVQ standard, who are interested
in working in the financial, IT or business administration sectors.
The foundations of the programme can provide support to young people
seeking immediate employment and valuable experience for those
going to University. The Brokerage works closely with Education
Business Partnerships, schools and colleges across 8 inner city
boroughs. (89% of trainees registering for the programme this year
were from ethnic minority communities). Company Members are asked
to support this programme by providing up to 13 weeks paid work
for a young person. The programme is extremely flexible and is
designed to meet the individual needs of both employers and trainees.
Benefits to Members include the opportunity to tap into a diverse
source of junior staff, the chance to form a relationship with
a possible graduate recruit, as a development tool for junior supervisory
staff or as part of an existing community involvement programme.
Every year the Company sets itself the challenge of creating new
paid summer traineeship positions and building on past success.
Recently Members and their firms provided seventeen paid
summer traineeship positions to students from local schools recruited
through the Brokerage. For many firms this represented the first
time they considered tapping this diverse local talent pool to
meet their short-term requirements. These positions covered a
wide array of responsibilities including roles in technology,
compliance, operations, and dealing room support. For the students
themselves who are of A level standard with many attending university
this marked a significant start along their career development
path. We are pleased to have such broad-based support from employers
in the City. We hope to deepen our penetration and as
a Company to leverage the strength of our membership to make a
profound impact in the local community.
Junior Vacancies – Many of the Brokerage candidates are
seeking entry level/junior roles in the City. Links with City
employers and recruitment agencies have provided it with the
knowledge, contacts and experience to prepare, pre-select and
introduce the most suitable candidates for particular positions.
Members are asked to consider adding the Brokerage to their lists
of preferred recruitment sources for any future entry level/junior
vacancies. This initiative has resulted in several full-time
positions at Company member firms who have been recruited though
the Brokerage.
Support In-Kind – There are many varied ways to support
outreach programmes at both an individual and corporate level.
The Company encourages participation through hosting and or facilitating
half-day workshops and providing speakers to address small groups
of young people as well as teachers providing insight into the
City, skills and attributes needed for City jobs. The Company has
collaborated with the Brokerage and Members and their firms have
in the past conducted twelve half-day programmes on working in the city for
students and teachers from the local schools. These
sessions provided the participants with a first time introduction
to job opportunities within the City and the skills and qualities
that are needed to secure employment. The format included industry
background as well as practical sessions on interview techniques
and CV presentation. We will resume our support and participation
in these workshops in coming years. Members wishing to play a role
with this activity are welcome to contact the Company office. |

The Lombard Prize |

|
|
| |
The Lombard Association founded in the 1960’s had an arrangement
with the Sir John Cass Business School whereby an annual prize
was given to a student for the best work on a paper concerning
the financial services industry. The Company has elected to continue
this prestigious academic prize under the name of the “The
Worshipful Company
of International Bankers Lombard Prize” and has allocated
a sum of money annually for the winner of the competition. Winners of the Prize are now chosen from all of the Universities and Business Schools with which the Company has an affiliation. |

Participation in the programmes highlighted above will aid employers
in the recruitment and development of employees for the industry
from a wide variety of sources, with particular emphasis on young
people in the immediate area to the East of the City who are often
not able to aspire to a City job. In addition the Company has provided
scholarship funding for talented needy students at the above named
schools beginning in 2004. Each school has been allocated £5,000.00
for each academic year. Updated information will be shared as soon
as we are able. Each of the initiatives discussed in this paper
have been designed in co-operation with established supportive
partners who can assist us in fostering the educational and charitable
aims of the Company and who are willing to work with individual employers
to design specific programmes that suit their requirements. The
Company is grateful for the extensive support it has received from
many individuals and organisations in helping to establish the
educational and charitable foundations. All inquiries should be directed in the first instance
to the office of the Company. |
